The effect of herbicides on the microflora of the rhizosphere of certain agricultural plants

Studies were made of the toxic effect of 2,4-D and its derivatives, octyl and butyl esters of 2,4-D and sodium trichloracetate on the microflora of pea plants. The effect of octyl ester of 2,4-D depends on the age of the plant; the herbicide is more toxic to the microflora at the 5-6 leaf stage than during budding. No physiological groups of microorganisms were eliminated from the rhizosphere as a result of the action of this herbicide. Application of 2,4-D stimulated the development of nitrifiers and Clostridium pasteurianum but inhibited that of ammonifiers. Pure culture experi-ments showed that Bacillus mesentericus, B. subtilis and several species of Flavobacterium were most sensitive to 2,4-D and its derivatives, while Pseudomonas dentrificans and P. boreopolis proved least sensitive. Azotobacter spp. reacted noticeably only when the herbicide concentrations were quite high.
