The effect of presowing gamma irradiation of wheat seeds on photosynthesis

Dry Gordeiforme 496 wheat seed was irradiated with doses of 250 to 100,000 R of gamma irradiation from Co60. The plants were grown in pots on sod-podzolic soil fertilized with 45 kg/ha of N, 60 of P, and 60 of K; soil moisture was at 65% of capacity. Irradiation of the seeds with more than 40,000 R exerted a strongly inhibitory effect on the germination rate. After irradiation there was a delay in the hydrolysis of high-molecular compounds in the endosperm and also in the synthesis of high-molecular compounds from the hydrolysis products. This inhibited germination of the seed. After irradiation the loss of carbohydrates from the endosperm and sprouts was intensified because of a higher respiration rate. The presowing gamma irradiation of the seed did not exert any effect on the rate or chemical reactions of photosynthesis in the wheat leaves.
