The epidemiology of brucellosis caused by Brucella suis

The epidemiology of brucellosis caused by Brucella suis

Zhur Mikrobiol Epidemiol I Immunobiol [transl J 31(2): 310-316

Investigation of a focus of brucellosis of the Brucella suis type revealed that all domestic animals, except pigs, were free from brucellosis. This affords evidence that the long-standing existence of brucellosis among pigs did not cause the migration of B. suis to other types of domestic animals. Out of 420 persons investigated in 2 foci of brucellosis 19% reacted positively to brucellosis. The number of positively reacting persons depended on the degree of contact with pigs infected with brucellosis, on the age and on the length of time the persons had lived in the focus. B. suis strains circulating in the foci in question were only slightly pathogenic for man.
