The failure of experimental renal tubulonecrosis to produce oliguria in the rat

The failure of experimental renal tubulonecrosis to produce oliguria in the rat

Australasian Annals of Medicine 9: 283-288

Acute tubular damage was produced in rats in the absence of hemoglobinuria by temporary clamping of the renal artery and, in the presence of hemoglobinuria, by the subcutaneous injection of glycerol. Then the time and volume of urine passed was recorded by keeping the animals in individual cages placed on absorbent paper. The specimens of urine produced "blots" of varying size which were compared with blots on a test sheet of similar paper which had been made with known volumes of urine. Comparison of the mean urinary output of the test animals with that of controls showed that both immediately after renal damage was initiated and at 24 hr. when tubulonecrosis was shown histologically to be clearly established, there was a statistically significant increase rather than a decrease in volume. These results were interpreted as showing that tubulonecrosis itself was not an important cause of oliguria, and it was concluded that it was misleading and incorrect to use the term "acute tubular necrosis" as synonymous with the acute anuria syndrome.
