A sheep was im-munized by 10 subcut. injns. over 54 days with doses increas-ing progressively from 10 to 300 cc. of tetanus-diphtheria anatoxin mixture to which 1.5 g./100 cc. of tapioca had been added. 3 mos. later 2 injns. a week apart with 250 and 350 [image] cc. of the same mixture were carried out. 10 days later the sheep was bled and the antitetanic serum compared by the author's flocculation test for antiserum detn., with that from a horse treated as usual to produce hyperimmunity to tetanus. The sheep serum titer was only 192 units as compared with 320 for the horse and the flocculation "zone" of the horse serum was less than that of the sheep. The serum immediately after the 8th dose (200 cc.) had a value of 80 u., that 10 days after the 10 dose (300 cc.) 240 u., and 10 after the 12th dose 190 u. in flocculation tests. The same samples in guinea pig immunization tests showed 1 cc. of the 1st, 0.2 cc. of the 2d and 0.15-0.2 cc. of the 3d were required to protect the animal. A further assay was made with the same samples mixed with a 100 lethal doses for guinea pigs of tetanus toxin and injd. into the animals. For mixtures in contact 1 hr. before injn. the values were 15, 100 and 190 u., for mixtures in contact 24 hrs. 75, 250, and 300 u. Thus tetanus antitoxin acquires a neutralization capacity in proportion to the degree of the immunization in the animal.
