The food of the Amur sturgeon Acipenser schrencki Brandt and the kaluga Huso dauricus in the lower Amur River

The food contents of the entire digestive tracts of 71 Amur sturgeons (53.3-131 cm) and 15 young kaluga (46.5-117 cm), collected in 1957 and 1959, were analyzed. Trichopteran larvae were the most important food (78.25-98.94%) of the Amur sturgeon, while crustaceans, chironomid larvae and molluscs of secondary importance. At no time during the ice-free season were sturgeons with empty stomachs found. The index of Fullness for Amur sturgeons averaged 70 (65.6 in June to 140.9 in Sept.), being 10,000 times ratio of the dry weight of food in the digestive tract to dry body weight (less viscera). Feeding is chiefly random with both young and old Amur sturgeons having nearly identical diets. The food habits of the Amur sturgeon are practically identical to those of the Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baeri of the Lena and Yenisei Rivers. Conversely, young kaluga feed chiefly on small, non-economic fishes: gudgeon (Gobio sp.], Amur ide [Leuciscus waleckii], Amur barbel [Hemibarbus sp.], banded catfish [Pseudobagrus fulvidraco] and young Arctic lampreys [Lampetra japonica]. Crusta-ceans, especially shrimps, were a secondary, but limited, food item. In Kaluga the index of fullness varied from 10 to 720.
