The food of the Caspian puzanok Caspialosa caspia

The food of the Caspian puzanok Caspialosa caspia

Transactions Of The Ussr Inst Marine Fishes And Oceanography 14: 211-237

Stomachs from 3084 individuals taken in the Caspian Sea were examined. In winter the fish are in the s. part of the Sea and eat very little. During the migration northward, from the end of March to May, feeding is heavy, occurring once a day. During spawning (late May and June) feeding is also heavy, food being taken twice a day. On the southward migration after spawning (June or July) feeding is even heavier, 2 or 3 times a day, and much fat is stored. Feeding declines from Sept. to Nov. but does not cease entirely even in winter. The total annual consumption is about 12 times the wt. of the fish, or 1.5 kg. of plankton (wet wt.). Copepoda predominate in the food (73%), but considerable "bentho-planktonic" crustaceans (Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Cumacea, etc.) are taken on their vertical migrations at night.
