A study was made of the fractionation of S32 and S34 during the oxidation of Na2S-9H2O by a culture of Rhodopseudomonas sp. Sulfur in the culture fluid was converted to SO2, and the isotope ratio was determined by mass spectrometry. A marked increase was observed in all of the experiments in the S32 content of the residual sulfide, while the S produced was S34 enriched. Only the photosynthetic species displayed selective utilization of the heavy isotope. There is a bibliography with 11 references.
