The genetic connexion between body size, milk production, and efficiency in dairy cattle

The genetic connexion between body size, milk production, and efficiency in dairy cattle

Jour Dairy Res 24(2): 135-143

Data used came from records of Red Danish cattle in Denmark, in commercial herds, and in the special progeny testing stations. The field records were of 13,000 heifers daughters of 152 A. L bulls. Milk yield and fat content were available on all but heart girth for only about 1/2. The progeny testing station records covered the progeny of 247 bulls. Heritability estimates for various body measurements and for gross efficiency of food conversion were all about 0.50. Milk yield was highly correlated with gross efficiency (0.84). Only slight correlation was found between production and body measurements (weight 0.02 and height at withers 0.31).
