The influence of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis in the process of endochondral ossification

Ossification in young completely or partially hypophysectomized rats, some treated with active or inactivated beef ant. pituitary extract, as well as in normal adult [female] rats treated with the active growth principle, is described. The process of endochondral ossification depends upon endocrine regulation, chiefly by the growth hormone which acts on the cartilaginous disks of the long bones and on the chondro-costal articulations. The histological condition of the epiphyseal plate was found to be the most sensitive criterion for assay of growth preparations. Regressive alterations followed hypophysectomy, but normal ossification was resumed under the action of active growth preparation. The extract used stimulated ossification in normal [female] rats, and a younger type of tibial plate than that of the controls was obtained.
