The influence of various methods of storing potatoes in ground storages on the value of seed potatoes

The influence of various methods of storing potatoes in ground storages on the value of seed potatoes

Rocz Nauk Rolniczych Ser A 80(4): 699-721

Three groups of experiments were conducted: 1. Experiments to determine how long after the setting in of frost potatoes can be left under autumn covering; 2. Studies on the influence of ventilation by means of slat ventilators placed along the bottom of the storage and on top of the potato pile; 3. Experiments with local methods of storage used in various regions of the country, including that investigated by the Potato Division of the Institute of Soil Science and Cultivation of Plants. The latter consisted of storing potatoes, immediately after lifting, in piles under a thick layer of straw where they remained 10-14 days until dry. The potatoes were then sorted, and the healthy dry tubers transferred to a new pile, covered with straw 20 cm deep and a 5-10 cm layer of earth. The peak of the pile was left uncovered until the setting in of frost, after which the storages were covered with a 2d layer of straw 10 cm thick and a 30 cm layer of earth. On the basis of these experiments ventilation of ground storages cannot be recommended; sorting in autumn after the first 10-14 day covering is recommended, as this measure decreases losses during storage.
