Abstract
O. basilicum and 2 subspp. of O. sanctum possess some insecticidal action against flies and mosquitoes, but are much less effective than that of pyrethrum. The essential oil distilled from the leaves of different spp. that were used for biol. assay differ in the percentages of their phenol and aldehyde contents when tested chemically. The mosquito-repellent action lasts for some time and the larvicidal action though very good does not merit much consideration owing to high costs of manufacture.
