The life history of Holoptelea integrifolia Planch.

The inflorescence is a cluster of dichasial cymes consisting of a large number of staminate flowers and a few bisexual ones. Some of the [male] flowers contain a rudimentary ovary. The development of the anther is normal. The tapetum is of the glandular type and its cells are binucleate. Divisions of the microspore mother cells are simultaneous and the pollen grains are two-celled at shedding time. In a few cases the abnormal development of additional pollen sacs was noted. The ovule has a massive nucellus and 2 integuments. A peculiar outgrowth, comparable to an obturator, is formed from the funiculus and an hypostase appears in the chalaza. Teratological formation of naked ovules is frequent. The primary archesporial cell divides to form a wall cell and a megaspore mother cell. A normal tetrad of megaspores is formed and the chalaza develops into an 8-nucleate embryo sac. The antipodal cells divide to form a group of 4-10 cells. Occasionally 1-2 enlarge and assume an egg-like appearance. The endosperm is free nuclear, the embryo is of the dicotyledonous type and the seed is exalbuminous. 2n = 28, n = 14.
