The localization of manganese in certain cell structures as an index of its physiological role The use of trace elements, polymers, and radioactive isotopes in agriculture

Mn was more strongly bound to cell structures in the seeds of winter wheat than in those of buckwheat, beans, or lupine. In the leaves the largest amounts of Mn were contained in those parts of the cytoplasmic structure which were not green, and a considerably smaller amount of Mn was found in the chloroplasts. When leaf homogenates were dialyzed in distilled water for a day, up to 28% of the total Mn of winter wheat and up to 48% of that of sugar beets went through the membrane. The rate of dialysis of Mn of the leaves at the end of the vegetative period was higher than at the beginning. In the leaves of sugar beets from 40 to 70% of the total Mn was found in water-soluble form, a smaller amount in metabolic form. Acid-soluble Mn was found only when there was a high Mn content in the nutrient medium. In young corn leaves 55-68% of the Mn was in water-soluble form and 20-30% in metabolic form. In sugar beets 26-39% of the Mn was found in the vacuolar juice of the leaves, and the same amount was found in the cytoplasmic juice of the leaves. In the chloroplasts of barley and winter wheat the Mn was principally in metabolic form. In experiments with sugar beets the Mn made it possible to incorporate S35 into the protein of the chloroplasts and somewhat attenuated the incorporation of S35 into the total protein.
