The nerve endings in the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, with special reference to their fine structure. II. Innervation of the mucous membrane of the rabbit's tongue with special reference to the taste bud

Arch Histol Japon 16(4): 613-626

A study was made of the distribution of sensory nerve endings in the mucous membrane of the rabbit's tongue. Frozen sections (30 [mu].) were impregnated by Suzuki's silver method. The nerve supply in the posterior part of the corpus linguae and in the dorsal part of the apex linguae is much denser than in the anterior part of the corpus linguae, the inferior surface of the whole tongue, and the dorsal part of the tongue root. The density of the nerve supply in the lamina propria seems to coordinate with the development of papillae, as in the case of the rabbit's palate. Encapsulated sensory corpuscles resembling Krause's were often found in the lamina propria beneath the epithelium. Blood capillaries were observed adjacent to these corpuscles. The intra-epithelial nerve endings seem to be poorly developed. The commonest form of the intra-epithelial nerve endings belongs to a simple or unbranched type of free endings, but in the papilla foliata nerves often show ramified and complicated endings. Innervation of the taste buds Numerous intragemmal fibres (originating from the subgemmal plexus) ramified in the basal part of the bud ascend to the gustatory pore through the intercellular space. Some of them rebranch and anastomose with each other to form a network. At the top of the bud they reunite to form a fine, meshed neuro-fibrillar ring around the pore. The intragemmal nerve fibres show knotty swellings of various sizes and shapes. The are markedly argyrophilic; the knotty swellings are generally tound at bifurcations and junctions.
