The number of still-born pigs in relation to litter size

The number of still-born pigs in relation to litter size

SBORNiK CESKOSLOV AKAD ZEM 10(3): 222-230

From 1924 to 1934, 1058 litters from a Czechoslovakian breed of the German large white pig served as material. The still-born pigs appeared in 285 litters (26.93% of all litters) and of all 9402 farrowed pigs 657 (6.99%) were still-born. Calculation of linear correlation gave the erroneous result that the % of still-born pigs increased with litter size. The relation of litter size to the absolute as well as relative no. of still-born or living pigs was not linear but curvilinear the no. of still-born pigs increased with increasing litter size in a concave curve and the no. of living pigs decreased with increasing litter size in an analogous convex curve. It seems that the % of still-born pigs increases also with decreasing litter size and that av. litters give the lowest % of still-born pigs.
