The occurrence of atheroma in the aorta in rabbits with renal hypertension

The occurrence of atheroma in the aorta in rabbits with renal hypertension

Arch Path 33(5): 655-660

Eighteen rabbits with constriction of the aorta proximal to the points of origin of the renal arteries and 9 in which the constriction was distal to this point were followed from 1-12 mos. Atheromatous plaques developed in the aortas of these animals which were roughly proportional in magnitude and frequency to the elevation of blood pressure, length of period of hypertension, and number of pregnancies. The lesions resembled grossly and microscopically those occurring in the human. A dietary etiology is ruled out with regard to cholesterol and protein content.
