The periodicity of diatoms in bogs

An investigation was carried out into the diatom populations found in 2 lowland Sphagnum bogs in Caernarvonshire, N. Wales over a 2 year period. At monthly intervals collections of algae and water were made. Algal collections were analyzed for frequency of occurrence of different diatom spp. and the water samples analysed for quantities of mineral nutrients present. Total diatom populations were dependent on rainfall in the summer but not during the rest of the year. Population density fluctuated independently of concentrations of mineral nutrients which remained constant throughout the two-year period. Individual species exhibited a periodicity of development, which was also independent of climatic factors and of concentrations of mineral nutrients.
