An aqueous suspension of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (2 x 105 cells/ml) was gamma-irradiated at 800 rad/min and at a temperature of 4[degree]C. After irradiation, the culture was maintained at 30[degree] in water for 4 hours; at this point part of the culture was transferred to nutrient medium, while the rest remained in water for an additional 4 hours. After 8 hours the sur-vival rate was no different for the 2 cultures. Similar results were obtained with more dilute nutrient media. Recovery rates were similar under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, although sucrose (0.5% solution) was required for recovery under anaerobic conditions.
