The relationship of bile alkaline phosphatase to histochemically detectable alkaline phosphatase in the biliary tract; including reference to the histology of the gall bladder epithelium

The relationship of bile alkaline phosphatase to histochemically detectable alkaline phosphatase in the biliary tract; including reference to the histology of the gall bladder epithelium

Jour Anat 85(4): 391-400

The relationship of the alkaline phosphatase [A. P.] content of gall bladder bile to the histochemical A. P. picture given by bile capillaries, intrahepatic bile ducts, and gall bladder epithelium was studied in rabbits, dogs, and guinea pigs. The enzyme was always present in large amts. in rabbit's bile; very variable in amt. (including zero) in that of the dog; and absent, or present only in traces, in that of the guinea pig. The bile A. P. content could be roughly correlated with the histochemical bile capillary picture in the corresponding liver, but not with the A. P. reaction of the corresponding gall bladder epithelium. A positive A. P. reaction of the gall bladder epithelium was only found in the dog. Only the gall bladder epithelium of the dog shows a striated border.
