The sexual behavior of Anura. 5. Oviposition in the green frog, Rana clamitans and the bull frog, Rana catesbeiana

The sexual behavior of Anura. 5. Oviposition in the green frog, Rana clamitans and the bull frog, Rana catesbeiana

Amer Mus Novitates 1224: 1-6

By means of homoplastic anterior pituitary injns., egg-layings of both R. clamitans and R. catesbeiana were induced in the laboratory. The oviposition mechanism whereby the eggs were deposited as a surface film consisted of (1) abdominal contractions and arching of the back of both the [male] and [female], and (2) up and down strokes of the hind limbs of the [male]. The [female]'s cloaca projected above the surface of the water. Preoviposition backward shuffling, characteristic of R. pipiens and R. septentrionalis, was not evident in the above spp. A possible course of evolution from the plinth type of oviposition (R. pipiens) to the surface-film type was discussed.
