The stylo-hyoid and stylo-mandibular ligaments in lemuroids and primates

The stylo-hyoid and stylo-mandibular ligaments in lemuroids and primates

Folia Morphol 9(3): 213-224

In lemurs the stylo-hyoid ligament is as a rule absent. Corresponding to this ligament in lemurs is the anterior branch of the hyoid bone. The ligament was not found in Caliithricidae. It is developed in 3 distinct types in Catarrhini. The stylo-mandibular ligament has, in lemurs, the form of a fascia spread between the temporal bone and the angle of mandible. In Cercopithecidae and in Platyrrhini exc. Ateles, the ligament is well developed. In Ateles, Hylobates, Pongidae and man a fascia-like plate extends between the temporal bone and the mandibular angle.
