The twilight shift

The twilight shift

Nat Hist new York 57(9): 419-423, 430-431

The longer duration of twilight in northern U. S. than in southern areas gives rise to more kinds of crepuscular animals. Strictly nocturnal creatures diminish in numbers northward to the Arctic. Few animals have better eyes than man for nocturnal operations. Many animal sounds are typically diurnal, crepuscular, or nocturnal, and are not confusing to the trained ear. Activity not heard may produce tell-tale evidences for the eye. Many parts of the earth during midday never have more brightness than twilight, such as the jungle floor, cave entrances, and a few fathoms below surface of lakes and oceans. Charts are presented on (1) length of day at any place in n. latitudes at any time of yr., and (2) the duration of twilight for the same latitudes each month.
