Different agricultural plants were grown in hydroponic cultures on a nutrient mixture with varying concentrations of N. P32 was introduced into the nutrient solution in a concentration of 1 [mu]curie/mg P2O5. After a few days the content of total and incorporated (labelled) P in various P-containing compounds (inorganic phosphates, phosphatides, nucleoproteins) was determined in various parts of the sprouts. During the first 3 days of sprouting, N had no effect on P uptake. From the 6-7th day the presence of N affected not only the uptake of P, but also the metabolism of phosphoorganic compounds. When the plants sprouted under conditions of insufficient illumination (depletion of carbohydrates) uptake of P decreased in the presence of N. In the light, an opposite effect of N was observed, which may be explained by the enhancement of the synthesis of phos-pho-organic compounds. Prior P starvation led to a subsequent intensive uptake of P, particularly if the plants received N during starvation. Prolonged (14 days) N starvation of the sprouts considerably reduced the uptake of P from the solution.
