Three cases of infection in pigs with Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis rodentium

Three cases of infection in pigs with Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis rodentium

Norsk Vet Tidsskr 59(3): 85-90

Infection with Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis rodentium was found in 3 pigs from the same farm. The main gross lesion was a severe necrotic gastro-enteritis with enlargement of the corresponding lymph nodes in which small necroses were noted on microscopic examination. In 2 of the animals pulmonary alterations occurred. On microscopic examination numerous necroses were found in the liver. Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis rodentium was cultivated in pure culture from the mesenteric lymph nodes. Experimentally one pig was fed 50 ml. of a 12-hours-old pseudotuberculosis culture on 3 successive days, a 2d received 0.5 ml. of a corresponding culture intraven., and a 3d one received in 3 successive days respectively 1, 1/2 and 1/2 ml. of an emulsion, in physiol. saline, of liver tissue from an artificially infected guinea-pig. As none of the artificially infected pigs showed other than transitory symptoms, it is assumed that predisposing factors are responsible for the spontaneous pseudotuberculosis infection.
