Time factor in ovulation blockade in rats under differing lighting conditions

Endocrinology 80(4): 790-792

Adult 4-day cyclic rats of the Charles River CD strain, illuminated daily from 6:00 to 18:00 E.S.T., were compared with similar rats illuminated from 5:00 to 19:00. Pentobarbital sodium (31.5 mg/kg ip) was injected at different times during the afternoon of the day of proestrus; its effectiveness in blocking ovulation was determined at autopsy the following morning. No difference was noted between animals of the 2 groups. Compared with the locally inbred Osborne-Mendel rats, CD rats show a longer "critical period," beginning before 13:30 and lasting beyond 17:00.
