Uber die Modifizierbarkeit des Befalles und das Auftreten verschiedener physio-logischer Formen beim Mehltau der Gerste, Erysiphe graminis hordei Marchal

It is shown that the types of barley mildew can be modified by environmental influences. This is especially true for the medium infection types. High temps. + strong light and low temps. with limited light accomplished the results. If the host plant is under unfavorable conditions then resistance is generally reduced. Seedlings showing resistance under laboratory conditions, with diffuse light at 15-25[degree]C, show susceptibility to mildew at later stages when grown in the open. Inheritance of resistance shows differences. With diffuse light and a temp. of 15-25[degree]C the seedlings exhibit resistance as a recessive character. With higher temps. and more intense illumination, marked susceptibility is recessive and moderate resistance is dominant. In the barley regions of South Germany 2 races of mildew are found, A and B. The A race is limited to a few hosts while B has a wide host circle, completely including the hosts of A. The B race ia more limited geographically. Race A comes into prominence only when hosts resistant to race B are grown. Observation has shown that early spring infection on summer barley comes about through rapid development from the conidial form which has overwintered on winter barley. Thus far only race A has been found appearing on winter barley in the open so that the possibility exists that race B overwinters in the perithecial stage, which would account for the sporadic and variable appearance of race B.
