The present native dogs* in the Gran Chaco seem to represent a mixture of pre-Columbian and European stocks. All those examined by the author had round pupils, whereas all wild S. Amer. Canidae ex-amined, with the exception of Lycalopex, had oval pupils. Thus the ancient native dogs are considered to have been derived from Asiatic and N. Amer. Canidae, and to have been brought with the Indians when they came to S. Amer.
