Arguments are presented in favor of the theory that Hodgkin's disease is an infectious disease of low infectivity and long incubation period with the portal of entry through the mucous membranes of the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. The etiology of this infection is being investigated along various lines: (1) Evidence was obtained opposing the view that Hodgkin's is a special form of tuberculosis. The association of the 2 diseases is supported and is ascribed to the presence of latent tuberculosis activated by Hodgkin's disease or to a chance coexistence of the 2 especially in view of their long duration. The demonstration of acid fast bacilli by smear or culture failed. The guinea pig test was positive in 3 of 33 cases. Of 18 patients tested with Old Tuberculin, all were negative for 1/1,000 and 1/100 mg., 8 were positive for 1/10 mg. The Meinicke clarification and Kuhn and Witebsky-Klingesten complement fixation tests were positive in only 2 of 12 cases. Blood culture and the attempt to infect fowl from Hodgkin's tissue were entirely negative. (2) The finding of a polymorphous, anti-formin, granular, non-acid fast bacillus by Fraenkel and Much was not confirmed in a short series. Attempts to seed the tissue material on a great variety of media failed. Blood cultures were repeatedly negative. The streptothrix reported by Feigin and Plouskier was attributed to a contaminant. (3) The elementary bodies found in glandular preps. by Gordon and Gow were believed to be artefacts[long dash]they failed to multiply in tissue culture, or to be precipitated by centrifuging. These bodies were found also in non-Hodg-kin's tissue. Donati's isolation of Rickettsia was not confirmed. (4) The Gordon-test proved specific for Hodgkin's disease if lymph glands alone were used. 72% of verified cases showed a positive result, the degree of reaction depending upon the quantity of material, variety and idiosyncrasies of the individual animal. Irradiated glands were equally effective. The agent responsible is not a virus since it is resistant to storage, glycerine, alcohol and acetone. Additional evidence of the non-specificity of the test was found in positive tests obtained with normal mouse spleen. The presence of large numbers of eosinophiles or of their product of degeneration was probably responsible for the test. Evidence in favor of this view was somewhat supported by the similarity of results induced by intracerebral injs. of Leyden Crystals (spermin phosphate) (5) Attempts to infect apes, dogs, rabbits, etc., with Hodgkin's disease failed. Research aiming at a serological test for the disease has been fruitless.
