Treatment of tomato roots with indoletriacetic acid (ITA) at a concentration of 5 mg/liter increased the difference of the bioelectric potentials (BEP) and enhanced the uptake of C14 through the roots and its movement towards the tips. ITA at a concentration of 400 mg/liter had the opposite effect. After a 6-day treatment of the bases of tomato and wheat seedlings with a 5 x 10-6 M solution of CdC12 the increase of the negative BEP corresponded to the increase in P32 uptake introduced into the sand with Knop's solution. Treatment of the tip had the opposite effect. Application of cotton filters to 3-cm-long seedlings, the cotton being soaked in tap water or in 0.01 N solution of NaCl, led to a decrease in BEP and p32 uptake by the plants as compared with bidistilled water and the control. It is suggested that the electromotive forces of the plants are related to the transport of substances.
