Variety X environment interactions in cotton variety tests and their implications on testing methods

Fifteen varieties of cotton were evaluated at the same 9 locations in North Carolina for a 3-year period. The variety X location and variety X year interactions for yield were both very small and statistically non-significant. The second order interaction of varieties X locations X years, was of substantial magnitude and highly significant. This indicates that it is essential to evaluate cotton varieties over the range of environmental conditions likely to be encountered within the breeding area. The lack of any sizeable variety X location interaction in North Carolina, however, indicates there would be little if any advantage to be gained from dividing the state into subareas for breeding and testing purposes.
