Venereal diseases in England and Wales. Extract from the Annual Report of Chief Medical Officer for the year 1959

Brit Jour Venereal Pis 37(1): 74-79

In the report of the British Ministry of Health on Venereal Diseases in England and Wales for the year 1959, the number of cases of early infectious syphilis was shown to have increased from 704 in 1958 to 773 in 1959. The incidence among practicing homosexuals was disproportionately high. The number of new patients suffering from latent syphilis continued to decline and there were only 20 new cases of congenital syphilis under one year of age. The incidence of reactive STS in pregnant women fell to 0.15%. Gonorrhea increased from 28,000 in 1958 to 31,000 in 1959, the highest number since 1947. This rise was not limited to large centers of population but was fairly general throughout the country. There were 89 deaths from paresis, 72 from tabes dorsalis and 485 from aneurysm of the aorta.
