As assayed by the line test in rats, the vitamin D of egg yolk was increased 6 to 8-fold by the addition of 1% of cod liver oil, to the diet of hens. Large amounts of irradiated ergosterol fed to the hens were relatively inefficiently transferred to the egg; a medium dosage (1'% 100 X) raised the potency about 35 times; small doses were transferred to the yolk equally with cod liver oil. Ultraviolet irradiation or exposure to direct sunlight only slightly raised the antirachitic potency of the eggs. With some variation market eggs were fair sources. Cold storage for 8 to 11 months resulted in little or no destruction of vitamin D. By the use of chicks, fed a rachitogenic diet, it was demonstrated that irradiated ergosterol fed to laying hens is deposited as irradiated ergosterol in the egg yolk, giving further evidence of the non-identity of the vitamin D in fish liver oils and that produced by u. v. irradiation.
