Experiments carried out at various experiment stations on resistance to black root (Phoma betae) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni?) showed that increased resistance to these diseases was not accompanied by decreased productivity and sugar content. The resistance of sugar beets to cercosporosis (Cercospora beticola) is related to the age of the leaves; young leaves are not infected, while physiologically old leaves are highly susceptible, so that varieties in which the individual leaves have a prolonged growth period are resistant to this disease. In selecting for resistance to black root, the method of selecting seeds which are able to germinate at high salt concentrations is used. The relationship between resistance to disease and the phytoncidal activity of the sap from the leaves and roots in sugar beets suggests the development of methods for using the phytoncidal phenomena as indicators in the selection of beets for resistance to disease.
