Yields and vitamin. A contents of shark liver oil as influenced by methods of extraction and biological factors

Two processes of extracting oil from shark livers were tried: (1) Steaming and centrifuging and (2) Water-bath process. The first process has been found to be more efficient and well suited for large-scale production, with regard to yield and vit. A content of the oil. The vit. A value of the oil which oozes out from the liver at ordinary temp. (26 C) is far lower than that of the oil obtained from the same liver by either of the heat-applying proeesses, showing thereby that disintegration of the liver tissue is necessary to secure max. yields. The influence of the size of the liver and of the area in which the fish is caught, on the yield of the oil has been studied.
