The formation of the food base of ponds situated on the boundary between the wooded-steppe and forest areas was examined. The bodies of water examined were of average productivity. The biomass of zooplankton was 11 g/m3, and of zoobenthos was 100 g/m3 at their peak. The main mass of zooplankton were Crustacea; these decreased in June-July. Zoobenthos was mainly chironomid larvae, by weight, and these were sharply reduced in Aug.
