Zootechnical value of the bull and artificial insemination

Zootechnical value of the bull and artificial insemination

Italia Agric 87(7): 435-440

Work on artificial insemination of cattle and organization of breeding in the U.S.A., in Britain and in Denmark are discussed. Two tables based on American sources, on the influence of artificial insemination on fat production of daughters with regard to that of mothers show that, with artificial insemination, the point where progenies gave better yields than mothers is more advanced in the direction of mothers with high production than is the case when cows were bred naturally. In the U.S.A. the number of bulls used as sperm producers increases steadily. In Denmark, the progeny test has been much improved. Only first-born cows, 27-33 months of age, are inseminated. The whole breeding work is controlled by government subsidized stations. In 1947/48, 7 stations controlled the progeny of 23 bulls which by insemination gave rise to 40,000 calves per yr. In Italy, artificial insemination has hitherto been considered chiefly as a means of controlling diseases of genital organs. Citing the example of Denmark, the author suggests artificial fecundation may be useful for genetic improvement of cattle.
