In 1886, Joseph Leidy proposed the name Mastodon floridanus for a lower third molar and some fragments of an upper tusk from the Mixson plantation in Levy County, Florida. In 1926, Childs Frick named a second species, Trilophodon leidii, on an upper dentition from the same locality.
