In a field trial, S was applied in Nov. 1968 at 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3, 3.75, 4.5, 5.25, 6 or 6.75 t/ha as a sub-plot treatment to an alluvial calcareous silty loam clay soil with an initial pH of 8.3. The main plot treatment was 0, 100 or 200 kg N/ha, 66% applied at sowing (May 1970) of maize and 33% when the maize plants were 30-40 cm tall. Soil pH was significantly reduced by S at all levels and the availability of the soil P increased in the 1st year, but the effect decreased thereafter. Grain and stover yields were increased significantly by N, and there was no indication of any antagonistic effect of S on N uptake. However, it was concluded that the application of S to calcareous soils was not economically feasible.
