Pituitary prolactin following hypothalamic de afferentation in male rats

The technique of Halasz et al. was used for extended frontal deafferentation (AC) and complete deafferentation (CC) of the mPdial hasal hypothalamus (MBH). Pituitary prolactin concentration (Pl) was determined 21 days after AC or CC by polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis by Davis et al., in normal male rats and in rats after long-term treatment with estradiol dipropionate (EP), 50 µg s.c. twice a week for 50 days. The results are as follows : pituitary Pl concentration in normal male rats was 4.4 µg/mg pituitary, and in AC rats it was 5.4 µg/mg pituitary; CC resultPd in an increase of Pl concentration to 8.0 µg/mg pituitary. Long-term treatment with EP caused an increase of Pl concentration to 10.5 JLg/mg pituitary, and after AC prolactin concentration was 12.3 µg/mg pituitary. These findings suggest nervous control for normal pituitary Pl level, via afferent inputs reaching the MBH from lateral or posterior direction.
