A Biphasic Action Of Ouabain On Sodium Transport In The Toad Bladder

In the isolated toad bladder of Bufo marinus ouabain stimulated the short circuit current (a measure of Na transport) at low concentrations and inhibited it at higher concentrations. Increasing the K concentration from 3.4 mM to 14.0 mM antagonized the inhibitory effect of ouabain but slightly enhanced the stimulatory effect of a lower concentration of ouabain. Two receptor sites are postulated for ouabain and discussed.
