A comparison of ad libitum grain and restricted roughage feeding with conventional dairy cattle feeding practices

In Trial 1, the performance of 2 similar groups of 22 cows each, representing the Holstein, Guernsey and Jersey breeds was compared for a 180 day period. The control group was fed hay ad libitum, corn silage at 3 kg/100 kg of body weight, and 1 kg of concentrate/3.5 kg of fat corrected milk (FCM) produced daily. The experimentals were fed 0.5 kg of hay and 1.5 kg of corn silage/100 kg of body weight plus 0.4 kg of a 36% protein concentrate per 3.5 kg of FCM produced daily. The experimentals were also fed corn and cob meal ad libitum. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) and ENE intake were similar for both groups. The mean daily FCM production was 12.8 kg for the controls and 12.6 kg for the experimentals. An abrupt change to the restricted roughage ration caused digestive disturbances. In Trial 2, one group of 20 Guernseys and 7 Jerseys and a second group of 30 Holsteins were fed hay and 13.5% protein grain mixture ad libitum for an 8 week period. The grain was fed to insure a 10% refusal. The mean daily intake of the Guernsey-Jersey group was 1.6 kg of grain daily. The mean daily milk production of the Guernsey-Jersey group was 10.3 kg which tested 4.64% milk fat and 9.49% solids-not-fat. The mean daily milk production of the Holsteins was 19.1 kg of milk which tested 3.24% milk fat and 8.93% solids-not-fat. The nutrient intake of these cows was in excess if the recommended allowances of the feeding standards of Morrison and the National Research Council.
