Absorbance characteristics and other physical and chemical properties were used to identify certain violet dyes sold over the past 30 yr under similar names: cresyl echt violet, cresyl fast violet, cresyl fast violet (higly metachromatic), cresyl violet and cresyl violet acetate. Prewar Griibler cresyl echt violet, when separated by column chromatography, proved to be a dye mixture. Pyronin Y, a xanthene dye, and an oxazine with absorbance characteristics identical to 5,9-diamino-10-methylbenzo[[alpha]]phenoxazonium chloride, were apparently blended to make this product. All other samples, including current foreign and former and current domestic products, proved to be oxazines. The current foreign products, cresyl fast violet and cresyl fast violet (highly metachromatic), differ only in dye concentration, the latter being the more concentrated. These two samples displayed the same absorbance characteristics and solubilities as the oxazine component separated from the prewar Griibler dye. The properties of the current, certified domestic cresyl violet acetate are very similar to those of the foreign products, but its absorbance maximum lies 5-7 m[mu] hypsochromic to them. This stain is known to be 5,9-diaminobenzo[[alpha]]phenoxazonium acetate. A domestic dye certified and sold as cresyl violet from the middle 1930's until early 1950's did not display the characteristic properties of the other cresyl violets. This dye had an absorbance peak at 622 m[mu], with its curve bathochromic by 19 mu to those of the foreign dyes, and is known to be 5-amino-9-dimethylamino-10-methylbenzo[[alpha]]-phenoxazonium chloride.
