A contribution to the knowledge of the mode of action of sulfathiazole in the organism and its relation to the reticulo-endothelial system

The evidence presented in this paper tends to show that sulfathiazole apparently is capable in high conc. of stimulating the reticulo-endothelial system in such manner as to increase phagocytosis. In one of several expts., 10 intraperit. injns. of 5 ml. sulfathiazole (Astral) were given over a period of 15 days to each of 3 guinea pigs. 4 days prior to the last injn., 1 ml. of a 2% soln. of trypan blue was injd. intraperit. into each animal. 12 hrs. after the last injn. of sulfathiazole, the animals were killed by a stroke on the neck. An increase in the amt. of trypan blue granules in the macrophages of the omentum was found. No perceptible or uniform change in the quantity of absorbed color was found in the liver, spleen, bone marrow, lymphatic or thyroid glands. The fact that an increase of phagocytizing power was found only in the macrophages of the omentum is attributed to the larger conc. of sulfathiazole in the peritoneal cavity.
