A histological and histochemical experimental analysis of the liver in the course of regeneration after hepatectomy accompanied by cholestasis and in the course of cholestasis alone

30 female albino rats were divided into three groups. Group I consisted of rats subjected to hepatectomy (70% of the parenchyma removed); in addition, their bile ducts were ligated at the same time. In group II, only the bile ducts were ligated. Group III consisted of controls. Liver regeneration was not inhibited by cholestasis and regenerating liver parenchyma (after hepatectomy) was less sensitive to the damage caused by cholestasis. Compared to rats with only a ligated bile duct, rats subjected to hepatectomy and cholestasis appeared to show an increase in liver RNA. In both experimental conditions, there was an increase in dephosphorylating activity and a decrease in succinic dehydrogenase levels. The latter effect occurs within a shorter period of time in rats of group I (cholestasis and hepatectomy) when compared to those of group II (cholestasis without hepatectomy).
