A list of the nudi-branchiate mollusca recorded from the Pacific Coast of North America, with notes on their distribution

A list of the nudi-branchiate mollusca recorded from the Pacific Coast of North America, with notes on their distribution

TRANS ROY CANADIAN INST 15(Pt 2, No 34): 199-247

This paper aims to give a complete list of the Nudibranchs recorded to date from the region. Full synonymy for each species is given, also a paged reference to every paper where the given species is dealt with in connection with that area and its local and, where possible, bathymetric distribution. Doubtful points in identification, taxonomy and synonymy are clarified so far as possible. A list of all the species with their distribution under 3 main subareas is given: (1) Alaska from the north down to the international boundary; (2) Vancouver Island region from the boundary down to and including northern Washington; (3) California from about San Francisco down to the Bight of Panama in Mexico. Apart from 2 isolated records, 1 from off the Columbia River and 1 from the coast of Oregon, no collecting has been done over the long stretch of coast from Cape Flattery, northern Washington, to San Francisco. In all, 101 species and 2 varieties are listed for the coast. It is advisable to exclude Scyllaea pelagica, which is of world wide distribution and the exact locality of whose capture is not known, and Hermaea Vancouverensis, belonging to the special section Ascoglossa. The remainder of the Nudibranchs can be separated into 2 main groups, the Holohepatica and Cladohepatica, 62 of the former and 37 of the latter. The distribution of the 2 groups in the 3 areas answers expectation from the general rule that the Holohepatica are characteristic of warmer seas and the Cladohepatica of colder waters. This distribution is modified somewhat by local conditions and by methods of collecting, thus of the 7 species common to Alaska and Vancouver Island 5 were obtained by dredging whereas of the 12 common to Vancouver Island and California, 11 were collected in tide pools or at low tide.
