A method for producing chance crosses and polycrosses of Pensacola Bahia grass, Paspalum notatum

Panicles of P. notatum that are ready to flower will bloom and mature seed in water if a short piece of rooted stolon is left attached to the culm. Since this grass is highly self-sterile, hybrids can be made by bringing together flowering panicles of the 2 parent clones and allowing them to cross-pollinate. Many crosses have been made at the same time by enclosing panicles of 2 parents in a glassine bag and putting many such pairs of culms in a bucket of water to flower and mature seed. Polycrosses have been made by placing labeled culms of a number of clones (ready to flower) in a bucket of water in the laboratory. A thorough shaking of the heads each morning blends the pollen from all of the clones and insures the random crossing essential in making polycrosses.
