Various methods of separating the growth-promoting activity of coconut milk from its mineral salts constituents are examined. It is shown that coconut milk can be freed from mineral salts electrolytically without serious impairment of its ability to stimulate growth in carrot root tissue cultures. Fresh weight and dry weight data, cell counts, and anatomical observations show that the growth of cultures in electrolytically desalted coconut milk is substantially the same as in whole coconut milk. The anatomical heterogeneity of carrot tissue cultures grown in both desalted and whole coconut milk is demonstrated.
