A new colori-metric test for hexoses and their polymers and the use of the test in measuring the sugar content of the blood

Makes use of the red color developed when sugars are heated with concentrated H2SO4. A series of standard tubes containing from 0.1 to 05 mgm. of glucose are compared with a tube containing 2 cc. of blood filtrate obtained as follows: To 1 cc. of serum 1 cc. of trichloracetic acid and 2 cc. of distilled water are added. The mixture is filtered using a small funnel. The sugar solns. in each control tube and in the unknown tube are made up to 5 cc. by addition of distilled water, after which 15 cc. of concentrated H2SO4 are added to each tube and the tubes heated in a water bath at 100[degree] C. for 5 min. After the tubes are cooled the unknown is compared with the control tubes and the sugar content of the blood serum computed.
