A new single-dose piperazine preparation for the treatment of enterobiasis

A new single-dose piperazine preparation for the treatment of enterobiasis

Jour New Drugs 1(3): 122-125

Thirty patients, all of whom were shown by anal swabs to have enterobiasis, were treated with a preparation (Pripsen) combining piperazine and a purified extract of the senna pod. The parasites were successfully expelled with a single dose of the preparation in 28 cases (93.3%). The two failures were treated successfully with a second dose of the preparation. This single-dose treatment simplified the problem of self-administration of the anthelminthic, particularly since the study involved entire families. It also simplifies the problem of prophylaxis for members of a family in which enterobiasis is present, as well as for pediatric institutions. There was fleeting, mild abdominal pain in about two-thirds of the patients, and increases in bowel motility in two cases. These were all transient and of no significance. The amount of piperazine ingested in the single-dose treatment was a fraction of the total employed in multiple-dose therapy with piperazine alone.
